If something happens in the course of work, it may be a WorkSafeBC issue.
If something happens outside of the course of work, the Refrigeration Workers Health & Welfare Plan includes Short-Term and Long-Term Disability Insurance for Class 1, 2, and 12 members. Short-Term Disability Insurance terminates at age 70. Long-Term Disability Insurance terminates at age 65.
The first step is to go see a doctor/physician. If your injury or illness will prevent you from working, contact the UA 516 Health & Welfare Office as soon as possible so that we can get the process underway. The Health & Welfare Office must prepare a final report to accompany the short-term disability application when it is sent to Great-West Life, otherwise the application will be put on hold. Disability benefit payments are taxable, and the Canada Revenue Agency requires Great-West Life to withhold tax from each payment.
Currently, the Short-Term Disability benefit amount is $600 weekly.
Currently, the Long-Term Disability benefit amount is $2,500 monthly.
